No, Upenya has never tested on animals at any stage of product development and never will. We also do not contract any third parties to conduct animal testing on our behalf. We adopt the EU regulation (EC) No 1223/2009 on Cosmetic Products, which fully bans animal testing for cosmetic products and their ingredients.
In South Africa, the labelling of cosmetic products is regulated by the Department of Health through the Foodstuffs, Cosmetics and Disinfectants Act, 1972 (Act 54 of 1972). While South Africa does not currently have stand-alone, detailed cosmetic labelling regulations comparable to those in the EU, it aligns with international standards, particularly the SADC (Southern African Development Community) Guidelines for Cosmetic Products and the EU Cosmetic Regulation (EC) No. 1223/2009.

Because different actives perform best at specific pH levels—and adolescent skin averages around pH 5.5 in its natural, mildly acidic state— we align each blend to its ideal pH window. Patch tests are an easy way to help predict if you will have a negative initial reaction to a new product. It is recommended to perform a patch test before incorporating a new product into your routine. Before using any new skincare product, apply a small amount to a discreet area (such as the inside of your forearm) and wait 24 hours. If you notice redness, itching, or irritation, discontinue use and consult a healthcare professional.
The skin ecosystem, also known as the skin microbiome, refers to the diverse community of microorganisms, including bacteria, fungi, and viruses, that reside on the skin's surface. This complex ecosystem plays a crucial role in maintaining skin health by helping to protect against pathogens, regulating immune responses, and contributing to the skin's barrier function. At Upenya Skincare, we recognize the importance of nurturing a balanced skin microbiome to achieve optimal skin health. Caring for the skin microbiome involves using products that support and protect these beneficial microorganisms rather than disrupting them. This approach can help reduce skin issues such as acne, eczema, and sensitivity while promoting a healthy, radiant complexion. For more comprehensive information about the skin microbiome and how it affects skincare, you can visit our detailed blog post on the topic here. By understanding and supporting your skin's ecosystem, you can make informed choices about the products you use, ensuring they align with the natural processes that keep your skin healthy.
You can prevent trans epidermal water loss (TEWL) by strengthening your skin barrier with hydrating, barrier-supportive skincare. Upenya’s lightweight gel and body cream help lock in moisture while protecting sensitive skin. Read more in our blog on TEWL.
